Molten rock shot 500 feet (150 meters) into the sky above Halemaʻumaʻu Crater on the night of July 28, as Kīlauea's summit eruption entered its 52nd episode — another installment in a sequence that has already rewritten the record books and turned an active volcano into one of the best-forecast natural phenomena on Earth. By 9:15 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (3:15 a.m. ET on July 29), the north vent was producing peak fountains, lava was blanketing roughly 10 percent of the crater floor, and a volcanic plume had briefly reached 19,000 feet (5,791 meters) above mean sea level before settling back to around 16,000 feet (4,877 meters), according to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory's observatory messages.
